Spring, please get here quick! Winter has worn on these bones and I'm ready for the sun to warm my face. I think the economy will liven up too when the sun is putting us all in a good mood and a pair of flip flops. Really, who can be in a bad mood wearing flip flops? Not me. So I ditched the WAY too expensive pretty website that I used to have, for this fabulous free one! Yay me! Money to buy a new pair of flip flops. I know you may miss the ol'website with the pretty pictures and the nice shop-here page but OI, this one is GORGEOUS!

COMFORT FOODS
I’m watching Man vs. Food and feel a pain in my stomach. As the star of the show inhales a hot inferno of a burrito the size of my 2 year old son, I think there must be food that is guilt-inspired that isn’t awful for you.
My son woke up every morning this week and said “Mama, cookie?” I bake at night after the kids have gone to bed, so this is his way of checking to see if I made his favorite cookie. He jumps up and down and waves his arms as I say “Yes!” Isn’t it funny how little ones are when they learn the wonder of food and how food actually makes us feel good? The love for food isn’t learned, it’s instinct. We were made to love food. Food was designed to satisfy us and make us feel content. The flavors, transfat and all of the other things came later. It amazed me when my children were born how happy they were when they were feeding. I’m curious if that is where the overall pleasing sensation and idea of comfort food comes from … the warm affection of love? The smell of a freshly baked apple pie transports you to a cool Fall day and you’re indulged with a toasty feeling. Eating chocolate chip cookies can make you feel like you are 5 again. Food is magical!! Together with the sense of smell, it can transport you just about anywhere. And then to add the scrumptious sense of taste along with it, it’s an incredible journey. Food transcends all of time and we are instinctual to find food that gratifies us … whether it’s a burrito the size of a small child or an oatmeal cranberry cookie.
So, isn’t there a way we can fulfill those cravings of food and avoid the preservatives, transfat, and all the other man made stuff? I think with some very simple changes, we can. We need to take a moment to get back to basics and find the natural taste in things. Skippin Rocks Bake Shop achieves that goal by using only the freshest of organic ingredients. I’m thrilled to be able to take you on a journey in time and bring you back to a carefree, uncomplicated segment in your life … if only for a moment.
Fall 2010 post
BALANCING
What does fall mean to you? To me, fall means warming up the kitchen with the most reasonable heat source … the oven! Fall is about enjoying such delicious items as: apple pies with just the right amount of nutmeg, pumpkin whoopie pies that stick to the roof of your mouth and, a new favorite, pumpkin bars with icing! There are so many recipes that get pulled out this time of year; the kind of recipes that “cozy up” a brisk day. Although, I have to say, September was wonderful! It was like a spare Summer month making up for the lack of a June, I guess. Everything always has a way of balancing itself. Cooking is like that too … salt and sugar can be added to the same recipe and balance themselves out. Or, if you take a whoopie pie filling recipe and add just a pinch of kosher salt, it takes it from good to magnificent! All the talented cooks in the world know these little secrets, that‘s what makes them so great. October brings changing leaves and the need for a comfortable sweater. However, I’m not ready to say goodbye to the warm sun … even if the holiday season is my favorite! Sending my oldest child off on the bus for the first time wasn’t as traumatic as I had originally thought, thank God! Adjusting the daily schedule, adding everything that needs to get done AND keeping it fun has been interesting. But, we are finding, yes, the right balance!
Skippin Rocks Bake Shop has lots of exciting things planned and we are working on making some appearances in Plymouth with our goodies! Stay tuned for further details on the upcoming local events and also some fantastic online Fall specials ...
